Mexico City -- Police discovered more than 30 human skulls in a cave in a Mexico City park Tuesday after a shootout with a man who said there were more bodies buried nearby.

The government news agency Notimex said police found the cave afte two men opened fire on a nearby patrol car and officers chased one of the men into one of the four adjacent caves.

One of the caves was lined with human and animal bones and more than 30 human skulls, all of them at least 10 years old, according to forensic experts.

One of the skulls bore the words "health," "money" and "love" written in red ink. An image of a devil was painted on one side of the cave. Investigators said they did not believe the skulls were being used for rituals.

The arrested man told investigators that he and his friends used the caves to rape women and that four women's bodies were buried in a nearby cave, police told a television crew.

the four foot high cave is located on a dusty hillside in Mexico city's Chapultepec park, home of some of Mexico's most prestigious museums.

Nearby is a concrete wall marking the edge of a major cemetery, from which the skulls presumably were looted.
